Hospitality with One Another
A Moment with Miriam - Week Three
OneAnothering with Hospitality:
I previously mentioned hospitaliy as a “silver thread running through Scripture.” Here are a few stories in the Old Testament that reflect this shiny strand.
Abraham was resting during the heat of the day, when he noticed three men standing close by. He rushed to make them welcome, washing their feet, asking his wife to prepare bread and choosing a calf for his servants to prepare. Perhaps, the writer to the Hebrews had this incident in mind when he instructed them to love each other and entertain strangers.
Rahab’s hospitality to the two Israeli spies put her among the five women mentioned in Christ’s genealogy; she is also listed among the faith-full in Hebrews, and again in James where he notes it was her faith made known by her welcome of strangers that saved her.
Difficult circumstances are no excuse for not offering hospitality. Abigail was married to Nabal, a “man crude and mean in all his dealings”. Yet Abigail, “a sensible and beautiful woman”, mustered her resources to bring David and his men food and a welcome, thus preventing a blood bath at David’s hand.
To honour his best friend Jonathan who had been killed in battle, David gave this invitation to Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth, “Don’t be afraid!…you will eat here with me at the king’s table!” Throughout the Old Testament food is linked to God’s blessing and its absence to judgement; Isaiah links the promise of a sumptuous meal with salvation. In Jeremiah, God links redemption to the abundance of food. “For the LORD has redeemed Israel…They will be radiant because of the LORD’s good gifts—the abundant crops of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the healthy flocks and herds.” Scripture overflows with examples of the blessing of giving - and receiving - hospitality.

Kevin and Allyson Martin - World Team - church planting, medical aid and literacy work with the Tokani people of Papua, Indonesia. Pray for them as they work to build relationships with the locals through providing nursing care, as they church plant, provide literacy programs. Pray that God would guide them and use them in ways that would speak in a way the people would understand bringing hope and peace to the tribe very much aware of the spirit of the evil one. Pray for wisdom in day to day decisions regarding the best healthcare, or the best marriage counsel, etc. Pray that their lives would shine for Jesus in every circumstance and that the influence of the evil one would not harm God's work in Papua.
James and Kathleen Ngenda: EFCC in Liberia - main thrust literacy, agriculture program, medical aid, church planting, pastoral mentoring and Internet cafe. Pray for God's guidance as they discern what God wants them to accomplish in Liberia. Pray there would be a time of encouragement and challenge as they meet with pastors they have trained in the past. There are many needs as James and Kathleen return to Liberia. Pray for the Holy Spirit's leading as they minister and teach the people of Liberia. Pray they would be strengthened, encouraged and receive protection from the evil one.
